A Neighborhood With a Story
West End was conceived in 1890 by Jacob Lott Ludlow, Winston's first city engineer, whose plan of curvilinear streets and parks was a radical departure from the grid plans of Winston and Salem. The neighborhood filled in rapidly as the city's tobacco and textile fortunes grew, attracting upper and upper-middle-class families who built the Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Neo-Classical, and Craftsman homes that still define its streetscape today. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, the district encompasses 508 contributing buildings dating from roughly 1887 to 1930.
